Natural Advantage: Association of British Drivers

Monitoring Google SERPs for the search query "act on co2" this week revealed that the ABD (Association of British Drivers) have taken advantage of the DFT's decision to use search queries as a call to action.

Whilst the first 4 search results are still government websites (all gov.uk) the no. 5 spot is now taken up by this ABD page, the snippet from which reads:

Through radio commercials and online advertising, the government is encouraging drivers to "Act On CO2" - but you don't worry, you don't need to...

Clearly expressing sceptical views with regard to government claims and/or policy regarding CO2 emissions they claim "The government is lying to you. Climate change is an entirely natural process that has been going on for 4.5 billion years."

My attention was drawn to this by Ross McKillop through his blog iRoss.net where he considers that the ABD are "cleverly taking advantage of the government's campaign".

Other pages of interest occupying first page territory on Google include:

...and on page one of Yahoo!
  • An Australian blog called Banner Blog which links to an interactive game on the DFT site, with a reader comment that says the campaign is "a bit preachy".
  • A news piece on Autocar.co.uk which questions why drivers are being targeted specifically.
